Own-Brand & Custom-Branded Hose: A Guide for Resellers

Own-Brand & Custom-Branded Hose: A Guide for Resellers

Hose is a commodity right up to the moment it carries somebody's name. For a stockist or a reseller, that is the whole argument for an own-brand range: a part a customer cannot price-check against four other listings in thirty seconds, and a range that belongs to your business rather than to whoever you happen to be buying from this year.

It is also the argument that gets oversold. Own-brand does not create margin by itself – it moves where the margin comes from, and it moves risk onto your balance sheet at the same time. This guide is the buyer's side of it: what own-brand actually means in hose, where the money genuinely sits, what to settle before you commit a run, and exactly what a bespoke enquiry needs to come back as a price rather than a question.

Three Routes, Not One

"Own-brand" gets used for three quite different things. Worth being clear which one you are actually buying, because the cost and the commitment are nothing alike.

1. Resell the stocked range
Buy from the wholesale catalogue and sell it on as-is. No setup, no commitment, no tooling conversation – you are trading on availability and price. Lowest risk, and the least differentiation, because your competitor can list the same part tomorrow.
2. Stock range, your presentation
Same product, your merchandising: your cut lengths, your kitting, your counter display, your part numbers. You own the customer relationship and the shelf; the depth sits with the distributor. Most resellers get further with this than they expect.
3. Bespoke manufacture
Hose built to your drawing – material, bore, length, bend angles, wall and reinforcement — with colour and branding preferences quoted in. This is where an own-brand range stops being a sticker exercise and becomes a product only you sell.

Where the Margin Actually Sits

Three levers, and only one of them is the branding. The first is your buy price, which is a function of volume and consolidation – pulling silicone, rubber, PVC, ducting, couplings and clamps across a single wholesale range instead of splitting them over four suppliers does more for your landed cost than a logo ever will.

The second is your sell price, and this is the one branding genuinely helps: a part number nobody else lists is a part number nobody else undercuts. The third, and the one that quietly decides whether the whole exercise worked, is stockturn. A branded line at forty percent that sits for eighteen months earns less than a stocked catalogue hose at twenty-five that turns every six weeks – and the stocked line did not tie up your cash to do it.

Branding changes what you can charge. It does not change what you can sell. Prove the movement on stocked product before you commit a batch to your own label.

Four Things to Settle Before You Commit

Demand you can evidence
Do not brand a line you have never sold. Run it as stocked product first and watch the movement for a couple of quarters. Sales history is the only honest input to a branded quantity.
A spec that will not move
Bespoke is built to a frozen drawing. If the bore or the bend angle is still under discussion, you are not ready to commit a batch – you are still prototyping, and that is fine, but price it as such.
Cash, not credit
Hoses UK is pro-forma: every order is settled before dispatch. No credit checks, no application, no waiting to be approved. Sharper pricing and deeper stock are the trade-off, and it means a branded run needs to be funded up front like any other stock buy.
The month-two top-up
Ask before you order, not after: what does a repeat run look like? A branded range you cannot replenish sensibly is a one-off promotion, not a product line.

How a Bespoke Enquiry Works

The bespoke production service covers replacing an existing hose, modifying a current design, or developing something new from scratch, across a range of materials and configurations. The quoting process is the same either way, and it is entirely driven by how much detail you put in.

1
Define the part
Internal and external diameter, overall length, any specific bend angles, and the wall thickness or reinforcement you need.
2
State the duty
Operating temperature and pressure range, the material you want (silicone, rubber and so on), and the application or environment the hose will work in.
3
Send a technical drawing
A drawing or sketch is required on every custom hose enquiry – it is the only way the spec is understood the same way at both ends. Note your quantity (one-off or batch production) and any colour or branding preferences at the same time.
4
Get the quotation back
The more detail in the enquiry, the quicker and more accurate the quote. Vague enquiries come back as questions; complete ones come back as prices.

The Spec Sheet to Fill In

Copy this into your enquiry and you will get a quote back on the first pass. Anything you genuinely do not know, say so and describe the duty instead – an unknown is easier to quote around than a guess.

Bore & outside diameter Internal and external diameter, in the units you work in
Length & geometry Overall length plus any specific bend angles
Wall & reinforcement Wall thickness, or the reinforcement requirement if you are specifying by duty
Temperature & pressure Operating temperature and working pressure range
Material Silicone, rubber, PVC, metal – or tell us the duty and ask
Application What the hose carries and the environment it sits in
Quantity One-off or batch production – say which, it changes the quote
Colour & branding Any colour or branding preferences for the finished part
Technical drawing Required on all custom enquiries; upload with the quote form

Send it through the custom manufacture quote form, or talk it through first on 01924 496111 if you would rather sanity-check the spec before you draw it.

Build It in the Right Order

The resellers who make own-brand work almost always do it the same way round. Sell the stocked range first and let it tell you which three or four lines actually move. Take those lines to your own presentation — your lengths, your kits, your part numbers – and see whether the customer follows. Only then put your name on the one or two parts that have earned it. Starting at the branded end and hoping the demand turns up is how distributors end up with a warehouse full of beautifully branded stock nobody asked for.

Open a trade account for wholesale pricing across the stocked range, or send a drawing and we will quote your bespoke, custom-branded part.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get hose made in my own colour and branding?
Yes. The Hoses UK bespoke production service builds custom hose in a range of materials, sizes and configurations, and colour or branding preferences are part of what you specify on the enquiry. Every custom part is quoted individually against your technical drawing, so send the detail and the team will come back with a price for your exact part.
Is there a minimum quantity for a bespoke run?
There is no single published figure – quantity is one of the things you state on the enquiry form, and the service covers one-off parts as well as batch production. Normal trade ordering still applies on top: the minimum order at Hoses UK is £500 excluding VAT.
Do I really need a technical drawing?
Yes. A technical drawing or sketch is required on all custom hose enquiries. It is not bureaucracy: a drawing is what stops a 38mm bore being quoted against a 38mm outside diameter, and it is why a complete enquiry gets a usable quote instead of a round of questions.
How do I pay for a branded or bespoke order?
Hoses UK is pro-forma. Every order is settled before dispatch – no credit checks, no application and nothing to be approved for. That is a deliberate choice: it is part of why the pricing is sharper and the stock is deeper than a distributor carrying trade debt can manage.
